WINTERS RICH HISTORICAL ATTRACTIONS

WINTERS: Z.I. HALE MUSEUM / ROCK HOTEL HERITAGE CENTER

The Z.I. Hale Museum bears the name of a local optometrist whose office now houses displays on early-day businesses, farming and ranching, education and home life. Highlights include the Ledbetter Pressed Glass Pitcher Collection, the second largest collection in the U.S., the J.N. Winters room with wedding dresses dating back to 1904, and the Music room interpreting the musical heritage of the area.  Visitors can find more exhibits in the museum’s Rock Hotel Heritage Center, a former railroad travelers’ hotel, built in 1909. It features a restored 1920s honeymoon suite and memorabilia from baseball legend Rogers Hornsby, a Hall of Fame inductee born in 1896 in Winters. The museum also presents an extensive collection of early farm implements housed in the 1927 farm equipment dealership of local farmer-inventor Gus Pruser. On display is a horse-drawn cotton picking machine that Pruser invented in 1912.
